As a toast to summer’s return, we’re releasing a bevy of beers that are the perfect complement to hot temps and cool shade. First up is our crisp and refreshing Curve Ball –proof that blondes are more fun. We’re also releasing a new Alehouse Flight Pack, brimming with a selection of beers paired together by the Cicerone Certified Beer Servers at our Alehouses. Summer’s Flight Pack features the award-winning Apricot Ale, our variety pack-only Honey Bock, Curve Ball and our newest year-round offering, IPA. Finally, we bring you hops. About Washington Gold Hard Cider
The color of this cider is a beautiful pale-straw while the delicious aromas and flavors are robust and balanced as you would expect from the cool climate orchards of eastern Washington. Fragrant apple pie and fermented apple notes form a great presentation.
 
As you sip this cider, imagine yourself among the apple trees during the fall harvest. This cider matches perfectly with seafood and poultry and would complement fruit salads as well. It also pairs nicely with cold sandwiches, fresh fruits or served slightly warmed with a dash of cinnamon on a chilly evening.
 
One to three years of cellar potential exist with this still (non-carbonated) cider.

No-Li Tasting 4/23

Back in the 1980s, when craft beer was still called microbrew or that weird hippy beer, Mark Irvin fell in love.  First, as a military brat living with his family and getting a taste of the rich beer culture of Germany, then as a homebrewer, and then on to brewing for Coeur d’Alene Brewing and Hale’s Ales, Mark fell head over heels for the art and science of brewing beer with character.

In 1993, after years of invaluable brewhouse experience, Mark decided to crack the top on his own small venture, Northern Lights Brewing Company, in his native Spokane.  “I could have brewed in Seattle, but I never could have passed up the chance to brew in my hometown and create my own independent style,” says Irvin.

Whether you’ve been drinking Northern Lights since 1993 or you’re imbibing in your first ever No-Li ale, Mark, John and the crew hope the pride they have in their craft and in their hometown shines through.

payette Mike Francis left the corporate life as an industrial engineer for Boeing Company in Seattle to engineer some industry of his own. After receiving an associate's degree in Brewing Technology from Chicago's Siebel Institute of Technology, followed by a stint at Schooner Exact Brewing in Seattle, Mike headed to his home turf of Boise in 2010 to establish Payette Brewing Company.

We chose the name Payette because it fits the way we live and work. Francois Payette was a French Canadian trapper whose name and memory is enshrined among numerous Idaho landmarks. The name has since become synonymous with an adventurous spirit that pervades Idaho's year-round outdoor lifestyle.

Gresser Vineyard was founded in 1998 when the first grapes were planted.  It was established by Paul Gates and his wife.

Paul grew up in California wine country, and started his lifetime's preoccupation with wine by helping to prune his fathers small vineyard at an early age.  He worked various wine jobs in California including sales, field hand, wine store clerk and assistant winemaker.  After receiving his enology degree from California State University Fresno, Paul moved to northwest Oregon and over the years worked as winemaker at several wineries in the region.  He began looking for the ideal place to grow Pinot Noir, and found it in the rolling foothills southwest of Portland.  He named it Gresser Vineyard after his maternal great-grandmother, of German descent.

Paul and his 2 oldest sons do the majority of the vineyard work, except during harvest, when hired workers often assist.  Even the youngest family member can help in the fall by making loud noises to scare birds away from the ripening grapes.

We strive to produce handcrafted beers of exceptional balance and complexity for your enjoyment. In 1998 we announced the release of our flagship beer – Red Thistle Ale – in bottles, so our craftsman beers can be enjoyed at home.

American Pale Ale, Geist Bock and a holiday favorite, Tannen Bomb, were also added to our bottled lineup. You can purchase these finely crafted beers year round in local grocery and specialty stores in Yamhill County and the Portland metro area. As the daylight hours and weather change, so do Golden Valley’s great seasonal beers.

You can look forward to fresh and varied offerings like Red Hills Pils, Fresh Hop Harvest Pale, Tannen Bomb, Black Panther Imperial Stout and Geist Bock, to name a few. Many ask us to make these beers year round, but we just don’t have enough room, so relish them while you can! Six packs, 22-ounce bottles and cases are available at the pub and brewery, so please ask your server. Brewery tours are available by appointment or upon request when our schedule allows.

Uptown Market welcomes the Craft Brewers' Conference to Portland!  This will be an awesome week for beer as there will be brewers from all over the country (& the rest of the world) in town, bringing with them special new release brews and hard to find one-offs. There will be beer events happening all over town, and we were lucky enough to be able to host 4 awesome breweries for CBC events here at Uptown!  We will start out on Wednesday with a Stone Brewing tap takeover, followed by a tasting with Uinta on Thursday, a Lagunitas tasting on Friday, a special Logsdon "meet the brewer" event, and a Paulaner Import Showcase on Saturday afternoon.  Everyday will feature a new limited beer, so you won't want to miss these!

lagunitas-1-of-2 From points distant and beyond we all converged on Petaluma in 1993 and ’94 with an unenunciated desire to be more than we were before. The core of Lagunitas came from Chicago, St Louis, Memphis, Walker Creek, and the highlands of Quincy.

The Chicago contingent initiated the brewing and the gravitational effect of its suchness did the rest. We all loved the beer but the mission was larger than the ordinary joy of a hoppy-sweet quaff. It was driven unseen by an urge to communicate with people, to find our diasporidic tribe, and to connect with other souls adrift on a culture that had lost its center and spun its inhabitants to the four winds to wander lost and bereft with a longing to re-enter the light. Beer, we have learned, has always been a good lubricant for social intercourse!

The Lagunitas Brewing Co. was not so much an act of ordinary ‘foundling’ as it was willed into being by the unspoken desire of supportive beer-lovers in Northern California after which they continued to nurture their creation and urged us forward to fulfill the unifying needs of that same beer-loving diaspora from coast to coast and beyond. brewing facilities. 

But Oregon's Dave Logsdon with brewer Charles Porter, has put the farm back into farmhouse beers with Logsdon Organic Farmhouse Ales.

We'll set the scene.

1989. Belgium. Boy on bike. (Ok, make that a young man of 32.)

As our aspiring young homebrewer rides his mountain bike with "fat tires" through European villages famous for beer, New Belgium Brewing Company was but a glimmer in his eye. Or basement. For Jeff Lebesch would return to Fort Collins with an imagination full of recipes and a handful of ingredients ready to embark on a whole new journey.

And then there was beer.

Jeff's first two basement-brewed creations? A brown dubbel with earthy undertones named Abbey and a remarkably well-balanced amber he named Fat Tire. To say the rest was history would be to overlook his wife's involvement. Kim Jordan was New Belgium's first bottler, sales rep, distributor, marketer and financial planner.

And now, she's our CEO.

Electrical engineer meets social worker; ideals flourish

The other side of the New Belgium story might not seem as romantic as bicycling through Europe; but it gives testament to our dedication, hard work and continuous push for invention. It goes like this:

Jeff’s Belgian inspired brews garnered enough praise from friends and neighbors that Jeff and Kim took their basement brewery commercial in 1991. Kim, social worker by day and mother to two always, began the marketing process by knocking on their neighbor's door. Artist Anne Fitch was that neighbor, whose watercolors came to help craft the New Belgium brand for 23 years, including the original Fat Tire label. Our new Fat Tire cruiser is still handcrafted by a painter, Leah Giberson, but this time it's photorealism instead of a watercolor.

Bringing on Peter Bouckaert, a Belgian Brewmaster previously working at Rodenbach, in 1996 helped influence our love of sour beers. Moving forward, Peter would take the brewing reins as Jeff began pursuing other interests. In 2009, Jeff moved on completely and we have continued to flourish with Kim, Peter, and a team of dedicated employee-owners at the helm.

What else continues today?

The Core Values and Beliefs on which Kim and Jeff built New Belgium Brewing Company. Before they ever sold a bottle of beer, they hiked into Rocky Mountain National Park with a jug of home brew in one hand and a pen and pad in the other. Together, they wrote down what they wanted to instill into this business dream of theirs.

At Wandering Aengus Ciderworks we press and blend over 20 cider apple varietals to craft our ciders. Our cider specific apples originate from France, England, and pre-prohibition America, but are grown now in Oregon. These heirloom varieties are essential for the depth of flavor, excellent body, and delightnful aromatics of our distinctive ciders. All our ciders are always GLUTEN FREE.

Fruli is a high quality Strawberry Belgian fruit beer, produced at a craft brewery near Ghent. It is a unique blend of white beer and strawberry juice. The juice complements the zestiness of the wheat beer and the result is a balanced and refreshing beer that is packed with strawberry fruit flavour.

Spring beers are on their way.  Easy drinking sessionables, citrus-y IPAs, kolsch, cream ales and fruit beers are all in season, but don't let that list limit you!  What's your favorite beer to sip on in the spring?  You can show us by brewing up a batch and entering it in our Spring Homebrew Contest!

 

 

Uptown Market is having a spring beer homebrew contest! it will be held on Sunday March 29th at 1pm (beers must be entered by noon, day of contest) Any beer or cider style can be entered. Two 22oz bottles clearly labeled with Name and style are the preferred entry. Awards and prizes for all winners in each category, as well as a grand prize or brewing with our head brewer on our system. Get Brewing!
