Beer Review: Saison de Lis

Saison de Lis

Belgian Style Ale brewed with chamomile flowers

By Perennial Artisan Ales

750 ml, 5% abv

This review comes from one of our owners, AJ! As always feel free to ask any of our bartenders and servers what they would recommend. We're your source for beer advice!

The first sip has a slight tart taste.   The second brings the experience of the effervescence throughout the mouth and then lingers and bounces off sour sides of the tongue.   The finish is actually smooth and soothing where the taste of the chamomile along with a slight bit of sweetness resides.  The nose of the beer exudes sweetness and not surprisingly, flowers.

This beer has a good mouth feel as like many saisons and farmhouse ales.  The addition of the flower brings revealing notes of sweetness and tartness at the same time which is unique and fun.  This is definitely a beer for when the summer sun is out or along with a light dish of food such as fish or chicken.

Who Wants an Old German?!

This weeks beer review of Old German Premium Lager by Pittsburgh Brewery comes to you from the infamous Brixton!

The story of this beer goes: "Little Herman" or the Old German himself, learned the recipe from his Oma and Opa (Grandma & Grandpa) brewing it at home. As demand grew he wanted to spread and share his original recipe with everyone for an affordable price. Hence the great pricing at a dollar a can!

As far as qualities go for this standard German lager:
-Appearance: Light golden yellow to straw yellow. With a light amount of head retention no more then a centimeter once the head settled.
-Aroma: A little musty, grainy scent to it. Very subtle.
-Mouthfeel: Mostly Clears off the palate in seconds, light bodied.
-Taste: Light Apple-like sweetness upfront, bready they the middle with a lingering metallic taste.

-Overall: (3.5 of 5) straight forward & affordable lager, I'd take any day over any macro-brew.

Thanks Brix!

Beer Review-The Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout

This weeks beer review comes from me (Liz) Uptown's CheersLeader/Marketing Director. I'm lucky enough to get to go between both locations meeting people and drinking fantastic beer. I've now had Yeti at both my home and Lake Oswego because I forgot to take a picture the first time... I excel at my job. As I'm not a regular stout drinker myself I took the recommendation from one of our staff and tried Great Divide Brewing Co.-Yeti Imperial Stout and attempted a serious review. Let's get to it!

Style: Russian Imperial Stout ABV 9.5% 75 IBU

Poured into my giant wine glass this jet black stout has a creamy caramel colored head that lingers creating lacing that persists to the end of the glass. The sweet chocolate aroma is accentuated with coffee notes. The powerful roasty malt base leads into sweet caramel notes. As the beer warmed up roasted toffee and oak become more noticeable to the taste. The underlying bitterness of the self described “hefty” 75 IBUs are ever present while the mouth feel is full bodied with slight carbonation.

Overall this award winning Imperial Stout lives up to its reputation. Although the strong alcohol presence is clearly perceptible in the flavor, especially in the lingering aftertaste, I found this stout to be smooth and well balanced for its style. It was the perfect rich and tasty desert after a long of day of professional Facebooking! Cheers!

Oktoberfest at Uptown Market! 9/26

Bavarian Crown Prince Louis, later King Louis I of Bavaria, marries Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The Bavarian royalty invited the citizens of Munich to attend the festivities, held on the fields in front of the city gates. These famous public fields were named Theresienwiese—"Therese's fields"—in honor of the crown princess; although locals have since abbreviated the name simply to the "Wies'n." Horse races in the presence of the royal family concluded the popular event, celebrated in varying forms all across Bavaria.

The decision to repeat the festivities and the horse races in the subsequent year gave rise to the tradition of the annual Oktoberfest, which now begins in late September and lasts until the first Sunday in October. Alcohol consumption is an important part of the modern festival, and more than 1 million gallons of beer are consumed annually at Oktoberfest.

oktoberfest-2012-316

Today, Oktoberfest is a sixteen-day festival held each year in Munich, Bavaria, Germany during late September (and running to early October). It is one of the most famous events in the city and the world's largest fair, with some six million people attending every year, and is an enjoyable event with an important part of Bavarian culture. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations, modeled after the Munich event.

Oktoberfestbiers are the beers that have been served at the event in Munich since 1818, and are supplied by 6 breweries known as the Big Six: Spaten, Löwenbräu, Augustiner, Hofbräu, Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr. Traditionally Oktoberfestbiers were the lagers of around 5.5 to 6% abv called Märzen - brewed in March and allowed to ferment slowly during the summer months. Originally these would have been dark lagers, but from 1872 a strong March brewed version of an amber-red Vienna lager made by Josef Sedlmayr became the favourite Oktoberfestbier.

ordnance.jpg

This Friday at Uptown on Scholls Ferry, get ready to try some new beers from Ordnance Brewing! "Ordnance is a ghost town in Umatilla County that was established in 1943, nestled between Hermiston and Boardman, Oregon. The town was named after the military depot and the community that worked there and raised their families. By the 1960's, after the war, it was no longer a community.

Now Ordnance is back and has evolved into a craft brewery, established in 2014, located in Boardman, Oregon.

The new life of Ordnance is left with the mission to spread the love of beer."

Mendocino Tasting 6/19

mendocinoo

It started as a dream...  Or maybe a flashback.  Back to the days of the hometown brewery…before Prohibition. A time and a place where citizens in towns and districts all over America rallied around beer that was theirs.  Beer that was crafted for them, in accordance to their tastes. Beer that was an expression of their lives and passion.  This passion, in a tiny tucked away town aptly called Hopland, drove the dream into existence in the humble but intrepid foundation of the Mendocino Brewing Company on August 14th 1983.

The Hopland Brewery was the first brewpub opened in California (2nd in the US) after the repeal of the 18th Amendment (by the 21st Amendment) in 1933. The passion, it seems, was a shared one (currently there are about 1500 craft breweries in operation in the United States).  It did not take long for the Hopland Brewery to become a landmark, a point of pilgrimage on famed California Highway 101 (“take the Golden Gate Bridge out of town for 2 hours; the brewery is on the right”).

It’s been a long strange trip from Hopland in 1983.  We’ve trekked from a 1983 production of about 400 barrels (5500 case equivalent) to the current production of about 75,000 barrels (over one million cases)…from distribution over the bar in Hopland to nearly nationwide distribution in countless stores, restaurants, bars and tap houses.  As we roll into the second decade of a new century, we’ve come from making a handful of ales to the manufacture and distribution our Seasonal Releases, the new Imperial Series, (IPA, Stout & Barleywine) Organic Ale and Lagers (under our Butte Creek Label), our industry jarring Cast-of-Hawk “mix-packs” and an ever-growing number of contracts brewed for other entities (a growing industry trend).  Currently, Mendocino Brewing is responsible for the production of well over 20 nationally recognized labels.

Portland Cider Co. 6/25

portland ciderco

"What do you do when you’re frustrated by the quality of the commercial cider available?  You start making your own!  What do you do when friends and family keep telling you it’s the best cider they’ve ever had?  You start a business!  That is the essence of how the Portland Cider Company got its start.  Founded by Jeff Parrish, an Oregon native, and his wife Lynda, an ex-patriot from the Somerset region of England (the Mecca of cider), the Portland Cider Company is based on the belief that good cider comes from good fruit, honest practices, and attention to detail.

Our cider starts with fresh pressed juice from Northwest grown apples.  We then carefully ferment it using yeast that protects the delicate characteristics of the fruit.  The results are cider blends that are easy to drink, refreshing, and downright delicious.  Drink it, it’s good!"

-Portland Cider Co.

Tasting at Uptown Market Beaverton on Thursday, June 25th from 5pm to 8pm.
